Summary :
Objectives: To report our experience of vocal changes observed in pregnant women, opera singers on the objective and subjective aspects of voice analysis and compare them with literature. Materials and methods: We carried out a retrospective study from January 2011 to February 2017 on 53 women received in our clinic of otolaryngology in Barcelona. Were included pregnant and opera singers. Results: 18 patients were in the first trimester, 15 in the second and 20 in the third trimester of pregnancy. In the third trimester 11 patients, 61% had vocal cord edema. 58% of all patients had hypervascularized laryngeal mucosa, and 47% of the patients had dryness of the vocal cord mucosa. The results of the subjective analysis showed that 32% of pregnant women in the third trimester had vocal fatigue. The fundamental frequency was normal in all patients. The maximum phonation time was lowered in the third trimester. Conclusion: Pregnancy has an influence on the voice, especially during the third trimester. Our study showed changes in the vocal organ during pregnancy. Hoarseness and vocal fatigue are more important while the maximum phonation time is lowered. These settings change the quality of the voice in a singer. This subjective character requires further studies including a larger number of singers.
