The first article in this issue of the Revue de Laryngologie Otologie Rhinologie relates to nasal lavage. Regarded as an ancestral treatment it has not yet lost interest. In France, as in other neighboring countries, thermal cures (spring water, spa) have continued to associate it with other oropharyngeal, post-nasal washes (using a Moure canula!) and tubal insuflations (with Itard's suction tube!). It is actually while taking the waters that the patient actually learns the correct technique of nasal wash.
Its effectiveness is no longer a doubt in the management of all sorts of rhinitis; Infectious, allergic, inflammatory, post-operative and of course polyposis. Water composition is important but also its salinity; Isotonic or hypertonic. It may be associated with trace elements. A factor often overlooked is the amount of washing as well as its repetition. Many companies have understood this demand and offer this type of treatment. Medical teams such as Dr Strnad’s are now conducting clinical studies to confirm this notion. Following of course others like Bordeaux’s own Professors Louis Traissac and more recently Ludovic de Gabory.
