Summary :
Introduction
In this article I propose to discuss two ideas in particular; the biomedical paradigm and 'power' in the medical encounter. To many it may not be immediately obvious why these two ideas should be connected, but I hope to make this clearer as the logic of argument unravels. I have chosen to develop these two ideas for this commemorative edition of Revue de Laryngologie, Otologie, Rhinologie because I hope to disturb some basic assumptions hidden within the intellectual traditions of modern medicine. Not all of this is easy and much of it might be regarded as belonging to the province of philosophers. To keep the article firmly within the bounds of real life, I propose to illustrate all the ideas with reference to a tonsillectomy. As befitting an article in a journal strongly rooted in the traditions of France, I will include an experiment with a frog.
