Summary :
Velar pathologies and their treatments may affect oral communication, be at risk for swallowing, destabilize the body pattern and be responsible for social frustration that affects the quality of life of people with velopharyngeal insufficiency. Velopharyngeal disorders may impact either directly the first phase of swallowing or have consequences on the 2nd and 3rd phase of swallowing by disorganising the functional units. The assessment includes various steps, the first of which is screening tests with scales. Then a clinical and instrumental assessment, mainly nasofibroscopy (FEES: Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) and more rarely radiocinema (VFSS: VideoFluoroscopic Swallow Study) will contribute in the diagnostic process and evaluate the severity of the disorders and their overall impact. This assessment will also help guide management.
