(English summary nonavailable) Suite à une longue maladie, le Professeur Henri Martin, vient de nous quitter, au lendemain du Congrès national de la Société Française d’ORL, société qu’il présida en 1981.
Né à Lyon, il est issu d’une famille médicale. Dès son plus jeune âge, sa passion fût la peinture, mais, cédant à l’influence familiale, il choisit la médecine, tout en sachant partager son activité entre ces deux Arts.
De formation médicale lyonnaise, il fût Interne des Hôpitaux de Lyon au retour de captivité en 1942, puis admis au concours ORL des hôpitaux dès 1946. Nommé assistant en 1953 puis ORL des hôpitaux en 1959. Adjoint du Professeur Marcel Gignoux, jusqu’au décès de ce dernier, il est nommé Professeur de clinique ORL à la Faculté de Lyon en 1971, puis, en charge de la clinique universitaire du pavillon U à l’Hôpital Edouard Herriot jusqu’en 1986.
Dès 1946, l’otologie naissante l’attire. Il en devient un des pionniers.
On lui doit plusieurs mises au point de techniques, notamment en ce qui concerne la chirurgie de l’otospongiose avec : la platinotomie calibrée et le piston trans-platinaire. De même dans la chirurgie de la tympanoplastie, celle du renforcement du tympan et aussi la platino-décompressive pour la chirurgie de la maladie de Ménière.
Excellent chirurgien et très didactique, de nombreux élèves tant en France qu’à l’étranger, ont suivi son enseignement.
Il nous laisse de nombreux ouvrages et articles scientifiques originaux.
Il fût lié d’amitié avec les grands noms de la médecine lyonnaise comme Louis Paufique, Georges Guillemin, Jean Rebattu, Marcel Gignoux, mais aussi à nombreux de nos maîtres français, comme Jean Bouche, Paul Pialoux, Yves Guerrier, Michel Portmann et beaucoup d’autres.
Tout au long de sa carrière, il a su allier médecine et peinture, pour prendre aussi une place prépondérante dans cet Art, concrétisée par un ouvrage sur la maladie de Van Gogh, publié en 1994. Son œuvre picturale est très riche : tableaux, sérigraphies, lithographies. Il fût lauréat du Prix Maurice Utrillo en 1964, et médaille d’honneur de la société lyonnaise des Beaux Arts. Il a participé à de nombreuses expositions dans des galeries françaises et étrangères (New York, Francfort, Genève etc…), ainsi qu’à la réalisation de livres de haute bibliographie : comme le «bestiaire d’Insectes», le «Lyon de René Deroudille et Jean Albert Carlotti».
Il fut membre correspondant de l’Institut de France.
Il restera dans la mémoire de tous, un chirurgien brillant, un maître estimé sachant manier avec la même élégance : bistouri et pinceau.
