Similarities between retina and cochlea: Anti-VEGF therapeutic perspectives

Summary :
The physiopathology of cochlear microcirculation has been the object of many experimental recherch. The inability to measure cochlear blood flow in humans has limited the investigation in animal models. The concepts, of brain, retina and labyrinth neurovascular units and brain, retina and labyrinth blood barrier, are today well admitted. The common physiopathology of inner ear pathologies is the vascular barrier breakdown and up regulation of VEGF, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor. Local treatment with anti-VEGF is now widely used in agis related macular degeneration (AMD). In conclusion, the author is convinced because of so many theoretical reasons explained briefly in this short article that anti-VEGF drugs may be the treatment revolution expected in inner ear pathologies. We believe that Anti-VEGF drugs should become in the near future the reference treatment for many inner ear diseases.
